The Geothermal Project Las Pailas II located in Liberia, Guanacaste won on Wednesday the award for "Best Geothermal Project in the region" during the Geothermal Congress for Latin America and the Caribbean (Geolac) that takes place this week in Santiago de Chile.
According to the state-owned company, the project was rewarded for the use of the directed drilling technique and socio-environmental management in the Curubandé region of Liberia.
"We are happy because the recognition is for the whole country. Las Pailas II is a 100% Costa Rican project; Exploration, drilling, design and construction have been carried out by ICE personnel, "said Marco Acuña, corporate director of electricity at the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE).
Las Pailas II will be, according to the ICE, the plant in its most modern type in Central America and the Caribbean, with an installed capacity of 55 megawatts, which will cover per year the energy consumption equivalent to 137 thousand homes.
Its inauguration is scheduled for next Tuesday, July 23.
